Hi,
the Zulu translation of OpenOffice uses
ukushicilela = to print
umshicileli/abashicileli = printer/printers (i.e. the machine)
I find that strange because in my opinion "umshicileli" stands for a person not a machine. I found the following derivation patterns:
Action: verb stem
(Human) performer: um- verb root -i (pl.: aba- verb root -i)
Result of the action: um- verb root -o (pl.: imi- verb root -o)
Examples:
Action: play = -dlala
Performer: player = umdlali (abadlali)
Result: game = umdlalo (imidlalo)
Action: dance = -dansa
Performer: dancer = umdansi (abadansi)
Result: (a) dance = umdanso (imidanso)
Action: think = -cabanga
Performer: thinker = umcabangi (abacabangi)
Result: thought = umcabango (imicabango)
So, in theory, the following should be valid:
Action: print = -shiceiela
Human actor: printer = umshicilelil (abashicileli)
Result: printout = umshicilelo (imishicilelo)
But what would be the correct term for the machine printer? Or, more general, what is the pattern for a device name derived from a verb?
